The Five Elements of Korean Astrology
Oheng (오행) is the five-element system underneath every saju chart: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. Your chart is a particular mix of them, and almost nobody's mix is even.
The five, one at a time
Wood is growth and beginning — expansion, planning, the impulse to build something that was not there. Fire is visibility and momentum: warmth, speed, the desire to be seen doing it. Earth is ground: patience, reliability, the element other people lean on.
Metal is definition — precision, standards, the willingness to cut what does not belong. Water is depth: adaptability, intuition, the element that goes around obstacles rather than through them.
How they move
The elements generate each other in a cycle: Water grows Wood, Wood feeds Fire, Fire creates Earth, Earth bears Metal, Metal collects Water. They also restrain each other across that circle — Water over Fire, Fire over Metal, Metal over Wood, Wood over Earth, Earth over Water.
A reading follows those two cycles through your chart. An element that is strong and unrestrained behaves differently from the same element held in check.
What an imbalance looks like
Too much Fire and not enough Water often reads as someone who starts brilliantly and burns down before finishing. Heavy Earth with thin Wood can read as steadiness that has quietly become refusal to move.
Missing an element entirely is common and not a defect. It usually shows up as a lifelong pull toward people and work that supply it — which is also why a partner's chart can matter so much.
Finding your own balance
Your five-element ratio is calculated from your birth date and hour, not estimated. Saju Oppa shows you the ratio itself, then reads what that particular shape tends to mean.

FAQ
- Is oheng the same as the Chinese five elements?
- Yes, the same five and the same cycles. Oheng is simply the Korean reading of 五行.
- Is it bad to be missing an element?
- No. Most charts are missing or short on something. It describes a direction you tend to reach in, not a deficiency to be fixed.
- Can my element balance change?
- Your birth chart does not change. The elements of the current year and decade do, and that interaction is what timing in saju is about.
