Saju Compatibility — Gunghap, Read for Two
Gunghap (궁합) is what Koreans call compatibility read through saju. Two charts are laid side by side, and the reading is about how their elements behave in each other's company.
What gunghap actually compares
A gunghap reading does not score two zodiac animals against each other. It compares five-element balances: what one chart runs short on, whether the other supplies it, and where both push in the same direction hard enough to grind.
The most interesting results are rarely the flattering ones. Two charts heavy in the same element often read as instant recognition and slow friction — you understand each other immediately and compete without meaning to.
Supporting, controlling, draining
The five elements relate in fixed ways. Water feeds Wood, Wood feeds Fire, Fire makes Earth, Earth yields Metal, Metal carries Water. Each element also controls another: Water puts out Fire, Fire melts Metal, Metal cuts Wood, Wood breaks Earth, Earth absorbs Water.
Compatibility is read through those relationships. A partner whose chart supplies your missing element tends to feel steadying. One whose chart controls your strongest element tends to feel like being seen more accurately than is comfortable.
What gunghap is not
In Korea gunghap was historically used to approve or refuse a marriage, and that history still gives it weight. It should not be used that way now.
A difficult reading is a description of where the work is, not a verdict. Plenty of long marriages sit on charts a traditional reader would have frowned at.

- Do I need my partner's exact birth time?
- No. The reading works from birth dates. An hour on either side sharpens it but is not required.
- Can gunghap be read for friends or family?
- Yes. The method compares two charts; it does not care what the relationship is called. It is simply asked about romance most often.
- Does a bad gunghap mean we should break up?
- No. It describes friction, and friction is information. Treat it as a map of where you will need to be deliberate.
